Visual Arts Partnership

The NGCSU Visual Arts Department mission is strongly tied to the community and to the Appalachian region. The Center is working with it to develop a formal partnership. Examples of current and future partnerships between the VA Dept and the Center that illustrate their academic and service compatibilities include:

  • Curation and production of local exhibits to complement the Key Ingredients: America by Food Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit (February 28-April 11, 2009)
  • Regular placement of art marketing interns with the Center
  • Plans for two photography exhibits at the Vickery House, the home of the Center
  • Design and installation of exhibits that focus on topics of Appalachia, presented during the 2010 Appalachian Studies Association Conference

A formalized partnership between the Visual Arts Department and the Center will benefit our local and regional communities. A major focus of the partnership will be the Appalachian Arts Leadership project. It will provide students with the skills and understanding to work within and for Appalachian communities in a variety of ways. Students will not only learn to produce and sell art, but to promote and manage art programs, as well.

Because of the Center’s relationship with the community and region, the Department of Visual Arts and the Georgia Appalachian Studies Center will continue to work closely together on a variety of academic, entrepreneurial, and cultural projects to benefit students, as well as local businesses and organizations.

It is envisioned that the project will be in place by January 1, 2010
