The North Georgia Summer Institute

Are you interested in becoming an Army officer; or a career in foreign affairs, federal law enforcement, homeland security; or a career in international business?  Do you want to get a jump-start on your college career? Then the North Georgia Summer Institute is for you!

WHAT IS THE SUMMER INSTITUTE?

The Summer Institute consists of two modules: a Foreign Language and Culture Module and the Summer Transition Program for Cadets Module. These modules are designed to be academically challenging, fun, and thoroughly rewarding. You will live on campus. Your classmates will be fellow Cadets and other students who have similar interests.

WHAT COURSES WILL I TAKE?  summer_institute

There are two modules available.  They are:

  • Module I:  Foreign Language and Culture (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish)
  • Module II:  Summer Transition Program for Cadets

Description of each module follows:

Module I:  Foreign Language and Culture.

You will accelerate your language learning through an intensive total immersion program of study. The learning activities are designed to be fun and engaging within the context of learning the language through substantial interaction between the students and the native-speaking faculty and teaching assistant. In addition to classroom instruction, participants will enjoy a number of extracurricular activities related to the language. You will devote nearly all of your waking hours to the study of your chosen language. Taking this module may also satisfy the foreign language requirement in your core curriculum.

You may choose from Elementary Arabic, Elementary Chinese, Elementary or Intermediate French, Elementary Russian, or Elementary or Intermediate Spanish.

Courses:

-  ARAB 1001 and 1002, Elementary Arabic. Eight semester hours.

-  CHIN 1001 and 1002, Elementary Chinese. Eight semester hours.

-  RUSS 1001 and 1002, Elementary Russian. Eight semester hours.

-  FREN 1001 and 1002, or 2001 and 2002 (depending on proficiency)

-  SPAN 1001 and 1002, or 2001 and 2002 (depending on proficiency)

"The high level of expectation kept all of us going and reaching for a common goal. The teachers were amazing. I have never seen a group of teachers spend so much time with students."

"I really like the use of the language lab as well as the trips to Chinatown, which was the closest to immersion we can find in America. The constant study of Chinese also accentuated the learning process because we ate, slept, and did everything with Chinese on the mind."

"The class size was perfect and we all were comfortable working with each other. The teacher knew our limits and where to slow down."

"The fact that we were never away from the language really helped. The activities on the weekends also helped lighten the mood. Listening to the music and other incorporation of Chinese culture helped and was interesting."

"The intensity worked. Speaking all day everyday really helped us to learn quickly."

"Not only have I found a new passion in a language but the program taught me SO much more than that.  It was a fantastic introduction into the college world.  I learned how to study and discipline myself like never before."

Module II:  Summer Transition Program for Cadets.

This is a transition program specifically for new freshmen who will enter the Corps of Cadets in the fall. This module provides you the opportunity to transition from civilian high school life to military college life. You will have current Cadets as councilors who will assist you with academics and physical fitness. You will learn the customs and courtesies of the Corps of Cadets. When you complete this module, you will be prepared for the rigors of FROG Week and the challenges of your academic courses in the fall.

Courses:

-  World Civilization II.  Three semester hours.
-  Health and Wellness.  Three semester hours.
