North Georgia College & State University responds to hurricane disaster The Military College of Georgia will make special accommodations for displaced ROTC students
Vice President for Academic Affairs Linda Roberts-Betsch said enrollment would be expedited for any qualified students who apply to North Georgia due to their institutions' closing in the flooded areas. She said that NGCSU is especially qualified to accept any ROTC students, since more than 70 of the university's students are currently deployed in active military service, although other displaced students also are welcome. North Georgia is the Military College of Georgia with 600 of almost 5,000 students in the Corps of Cadets. "Just this week, up to 25 of our cadets are being deployed through the National Guard and the State Defense Force to assist in the Gulf Coast communities affected by the hurricane," said Vice President for Student Affairs Judith Bryant. Col. Bruce Georgia, professor of Military Science, is contacting the cadet command of the colleges and universities whose ROTC students have been displaced. "Space will be made available in our residence halls that house our Corps of Cadets," Georgia said. "North Georgia is a perfect fit for any ROTC students who want to continue their training and education immediately." Several North Georgia faculty members also have volunteered to house non-ROTC students who enroll at the university during the emergency situation. "The Board of Regents has authorized NGCSU to waive out-of-state tuition and defer tuition, fees, and room and board payments," said Vice President for Business and Finance Mac McConnell. The Delta Zeta sorority, along with other student organizations, is staging a fundraising drive on campus to benefit the hurricane victims. With 75,000 college students in the New Orleans area alone having classes indefinitely postponed and estimates that most campuses will not be able to reopen for six months or longer, the University System of Georgia and other higher education systems are responding to those students' placement needs.
