Additionally, you may take up to four other labs after completing methods (Abnormal, Social, Cognition, Neuroscience). Following this course of action allows us to remove one elective from Area G. (Two if you take all the labs).

Research Talk: Monkey Memory

Who: Dr. Jonathan Gulledge
When: Monday, April 13th at 2:30PM
Where: NOC Room 106

Monkeys Count, What is Next?

Over the past few years the topic of nonhuman primate cognition has been the focus of some of the most interesting and contentious debates in cognitive psychology. The variety of exceptional cognitive abilities displayed by nonhuman primates has intrigued many of the most active and influential researchers in our discipline. With the application of computer technology to the nonhuman primate research arena numerous new abilities, capacities, and applications have been discovered. Computer-based studies of nonhuman primate short-term memory, long-term memory, visuospatial working memory, attention, and numerical cognition will be discussed. Additionally, studies of the negative impact of long term exposure to microgravity (e.g., spaceflight) on nonhuman primate cognition will be discussed.

Academic Probation
Repeating courses and earning a higher grade is the quickest way to raise the GPA. Encourage students to retake courses with grades of D’s and F’s as quickly as possible while subject is still fresh in their mind. Not more than 25 percent of the credits for graduation may carry grades of D.

Undergraduate students who are not in good academic standing (probation or warning) are required to meet with his/her academic advisor prior to registration to obtain a second PIN number (ALTPin). Online registration is permitted but the ALTPin is required to access Registration. This ALTPin requirement remains until student is back in good academic standing.

Alternate PIN number.
Ensure that all students with less than 45 earned hours receive a completed, fully detailed, and signed copy of the Permit-to-Register with the required ALT PIN number on it and make sure a completed and signed copy of the Permit-to-Register remains in the students’ folder. Remind students that the ALT PIN number will be good through drop/add period of the following semester.

Summer Courses
HOPE students who will be taking courses during the summer must complete a summer financial aid form through the Financial Aid office http://apache.northgeorgia.edu/enrollment/finaid/index.htm.

    mass advising spring 2009

    Hello Psych Majors,

Next week is advising time for summer and fall 2009. We will be holding 4 mass advising sessions to aid you in your choices. We will have as many faculty as possible at these sessions to help you. Our goal is a very fast over-view (10 minutes) with reminders of pre-reqs, then we'll talk about our new curriculum that starts in the fall and how it will allow you to get an even better education. Summer and Fall schedules are posted and we'll be sharing that info if you haven't checked banner yet.

    1. Wed from 10 - 11 in the Library, CTLE room on the third floor
    2. Wed from 4 - 5 in 104 Dunlap
    3. Thur during the meeting period in 104 Dunlap
    4. Fri from 10 - 11 in the Library, CTLE room on the third floor

    ** IMPORTANT NOTE:

Beginning in the fall both Quantitative Methods (3070), formally known as Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, and Research Methods (3080) will be four hour classes. We will have the usual three hours together as either a TTR or MW format and in addition we will have a three hour lab. This will greatly enhance learning in these classes. Additionally, we will be offering lab class for Abnormal and Social in the fall for anyone that has completed 3080. In the spring of 2010, Cognition and Neuroscience will be offered with a lab for those that meet the pre-reqs. This is going to be a great opportunity to get some hands on experience and will be manditory for all freshmen majors beginning in the fall. We have added the three hours of lab by dropping one elective class from Area G. Everyone that has completed 3080 is eligable to take the lab sections of our 4 upper level classes, even if you've already taken the class. Additionally, we will be encouraging you to take more than one upper level lab if it suits your careers goals. You can use the extra-hours as elective hours on your Plan of Stuy (POS).

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week, prof_chuck

    Mass advising for spring

Be on the lookout for mass advising sessions. Registration starts in two weeks.

We will have two in the Library (CTLE on the third floor) on Wednesday the 4th and Friday the 6th from 10 - 11 a.m.

Additionally, we will have in Dunlap 104 on Wednesday the 4th from 4 - 5 p.m. and on Thursday the 5th during the meeting hour.

Let’s all be smart and plan ahead

    Welcome back for Spring 2009

    Hello Scholars,

Welcome back for another exciting semester.

Stay on the lookout for Psych club meeting times and some guest speakers this spring.

    spring 2009 electives

    Scholars,

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, the following are elective possibilities for Spring 2009:

PSYC3181 Psychology of Aging with Robertson. Totally online so there are no conflicts, but seating is limited.

PSYC4840 Clinical Theories with Hill  MW @ 1:25

PSYC3200 Advanced Human Development with  Furbush  TBA (will be decided before registration opens)

    ----------

In addition we have other options for those in need

SOCI3481 Sociology of Aging is also cross-listed as a psych course. Again there should be no conflicts as this course will be online too.

MGMT4669 Org Behavior is cross-listed with our org behavior class. We are working to get a PSYC listing on that class. Stay tuned to Banner for more info.

    ----------

Keep this in mind about your aging classes. If you are working towards a certificate in gerontology then you can take the two aging classes above as area G electives and still get certificate credit. However, if you are getting a minor in aging you can not use the aging classes as electives in area G.... basically you can double dip with the certificate, but not with the minor as is the usual case.

Chow advising, cause you gotta eat...

    What is a psychology major?

    C&A

Sometimes being a psychology student means making a presentation of your Research Methods project at the Apple Digital Campus Leadership Institute to Faculty and Administrators from around the world. In the photo above Ashley and Catherine are happy to have finished this conference as a warm up for their APS presentation in Chicago. Below Courtney and Tiff have a faculty member practicing some of the ideas for Google documents that they shared at the ADCLI 2008 conference.

    Who is my advisor?

What are you doing this summer?

FYI... if you are serious about graduate school come and talk to me about this.

Undergraduate Statistics Program Now Taking Applications!

APA's Advanced Statistical Training in Psychology program is now open for applications! This exceptional opportunity is designed for students who will be undergraduate seniors in the 2008-2009 academic year. It is an ideal way to learn more about statistics at a time when many students are thinking about graduate school. Successful applicants are those who have firm plans to pursue a graduate degree in psychological science.

Up to 20 students will be selected to participate in this intensive, 9-day, hands-on seminar. Featured activities include lectures, SPSS activities, hands-on activities, discussions about graduate school, as well as plenty of fun!

The ASTP targets students who are from traditionally underrepresented groups in psychology. For purposes of this program, the definition of underrepresented groups is intentionally broad, including students who are members of ethnic minority groups, first generation college students, and students who have had to overcome other kinds of social, physical, or economic barriers on the road to academic excellence.

ASTP will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park, July 12 - 20. Housing, meals, instruction, labs, and some social events are covered for all students. Participants will pay a $200 registration fee and provide for their own travel. Financial need should not be a barrier to anyone's participation. For those with financial need, scholarship support is available for travel as well as for the registration fee.

The deadline for applications is Monday, March 17. Visit www.apa.org/science/astp.html for more information about the program and the application requirements.

    Welcome back!

Welcome back psychology scholars. Don't forget to see your advisor (or any faculty member) for advice and planning for the future.

    Changing your major in Banner

If you change your major to Psychology using your banner account the following things will happen before it becomes official:

1). an email will automatically be sent to Dr. Robertson who is keeping up with our majors and assigning advisors
2). Dr. Robertson will send you an email asking you to listen to the online advising podcasts (because we want you to be informed consumers)
3). Dr. Robertson will set-up a time to meet with you, talk about your future, and assign you an advisor
4). Dr. Robertson will send an email to the Registrar asking them to change you major to psych and telling them who your "official" advisor will be

All this may take some time, please be patient. You are always welcome to stop by 102B Dunlap Hall and check your progress. We welcome everyone to become a psych major, but we want to talk with you before making it official because we want you to accomplish your goals in a timely fashion (i.e. we want you to get advised).

Cognition Lab Students Share Technology Ideas at ADCLI 2007

Just tooting our own horn.... Several Cognition and Gerotechnology Lab students went down to the Apple Digital Campus Leadership Institute (ADCLI) this spring and shared two of the projects that we are working on that integrate their life as students today with our current technology.

Hanna Stepp and Courtney Winterbottom presented our departmental approach to academic advising using enhanced podcasts. Katie Scoglietti and Christopher Hilton shared how we develop information literacy skills (and learn more about cognition) by demonstrating and explaining our social bookmarking project for Cognition (PSYC 3310).

In addition, they all made a presentation and participated in a question and answer session at the conference. You can download a podcast of their session here. Just subscribe to the day one podcasts. There session is entitled, "What can they do and what do they want?" The slides that they used in their presentation are available for download here. NGCSU Psych Students attend Appalachian IDEAS Network

Here's a nice photo of me with Billy Breedlove and Vicki Herrin (left to right). We recently attend the Appalachian IDEAS Network were we pitched our social venture at the 3rd annual showcase. Vicki and Billy presented the Psi Chi Foodbank project.  A novel approach to solving our local probelms locally. Psi Chi students have been selling some of the items donated to the Community Helping Place thrift store on eBay... the idea being that some items are more valuable than what they would be able to fetch in the thrift store. The money is then used to purchase foodbank items in bulk. You can always know what we are selling locally (no shipping fees if you pick it up) by reading our our RSS feed... or make the communityhelpinng place one of your favorite sellers and check it when you log into your eBay account.

Thanks to all the Psi Chi students that have been working on this project. See me if you want to help.
